Azeal Barbershop is nestled between a pizzeria and a grocery store and yet they proudly say they provide the most satisfaction on the block. They are confident you will feel better about your cut than food will ever make you. A bold statement to be sure.
This is a traditional shop: a TV flanks 16 chairs on the right, jerseys of local legends grace the walls and there is some stoppage during cuts when points are being argued across the room. They have been open for 7 years and although are primarily a black shop, they have increased their skill level in cutting all textures of hair and regional styles in response to Charlotte’s recent growth.
“We get a lot of out-of-towners in Charlotte. We get so many other state immigrants coming here, their cuts are so different most of the time,” Ezra Jackson, barber, explained.
“So we take that and put our own twist to it by being in the south.” That twist he speaks of has brought them so many customers that people frequently have to wait outside because all the chairs are filled. If you don’t want to wait, you can of course make an appointment. But if you choose to wait, you can take your kids over and read one of my many children’s books available.
This shop is for you if
- You want to take your kids with you
- You don’t mind waiting a bit for a cut
- You are new to Charlotte and want some advice from locals
