September, the unofficial mark of a new calendar year in the fashion world has arrived and many are making lists, and lining up classic and trendy pieces in formation for a well-balanced and updated Autumn season wardrobe.

When building a wardrobe, take a few things into account. First, it’s a skill. Second, it takes time. But the key is to start with the essentials. A trench coat, suiting, classic oxford, basic black trousers and brogues are great starting points, key pieces that’ll never leave you even in times of a fashion famine. Basically, it’s about a “man intervention” and we’re here to make sure you evolve this season.

Hand-picking the season’s hottest trends – military, embroidery and pleats- was a no-brainer which makes it easier to intertwine into your current situation, as well as transition from the gym, the office, to a dinner date and even that lucky weekend getaway. Our 10-point guide will steer you in the right direction and prep you for a balanced, late summer wardrobe.

The Jacket

MILITARY STYLE COAT, $259.00

Military (Classic) vs Embroidery (Trend)

Military seems like a given for the cooler months and proves to be one of the more popular styles in men’s outerwear. Who doesn’t love a knee length, moss green tailored wool jacket that pairs well with every outfit? On the other hand, embroidery has found its way from your grandmother’s house onto a few designer’s inspiration boards and finally stitched on nylon jackets in the form of eccentric patches, mostly exotic florals and birds, and adds interest and conversation to an otherwise ordinary windbreaker. Both of these pieces are from Zara and very easy on the billfold.

The Shoe

Trainer (Classic) vs Wallaby (Trend)

Every man deserves a quality pair of trainers to wear come the weekend, Casual Friday or the Frieze Art Fair and these babies from Coach give you the versatility to dress up or dress down. And did I mention hella comfortable? Not to be overlooked, thanks to Zara the dress shoe has received an interesting update, in the form of a wallaby. You remember the iconic shoe made famous by 1990s East Coast rap collective the Wu Tang Clan? Yeah, it’s back and outfitted in two-toned leather, sturdy ridged sole and bit of a British ‘60s flare. Think of it as the new oxford shoe!

The Knit

HERRINGBONE HALF-ZIP SWEATER, $84.00

Cardigan (Classic) vs Zipped Neck (Trend)

As seasons change, most of us tend to reach inside the back of our wardrobes for that ole faithful cotton cardigan, which is nice if you’re going for that Ivy League-I-must-wear-a-sweater-under-a-dull-brown-blazer look. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with an easy fallback, and this double breasted one from COS is Bevel Code approved. But what about pairing that same blazer with an elegant, athletic full or half-zipped knit in either a soft cashmere or alpaca material; it’s not a dated as an Eighties-style tracksuit top but the same effect. Pur selects an easy and tailored fit from Brooks Brothers. I promise it’ll quickly become your go-to item of the season.

The Trouser

CLASSIC SLIM JERSEY TROUSERS, $125.00

Tailored (Classic) vs Relax Pleated (Trend)

Tailored trousers seem so formal, so corporate and so dated which is why you need a new variety for your Monday-Friday gigs. Now, on the flip side, a revival has taken place and purposely reached into the back of your father’s closet to borrow inspiration for the relaxed pleated (yes I said pleated) pants. Both selections, at opposite ends of the style spectrum, are available at Club Monaco and ready to make their way into your Fall closet lineup.

The Accessory

CAMO LEATHER SLIM BILLFOLD, $138.00

Printed Wallet (Classic) vs Black Backpack (Trend)

The past few seasons have shown us that designers love a bold print, which in many ways is the new norm, leaving an easy path into the world of men’s accessories. Over the past few years, camouflage has become a neutral and adds a subtle burst of modernity to an outfit. Take this billfold from Jack Spade: modern yet safe enough to pull out when you’re paying for a company dinner, and pairs well with other hues and combinations. Surprisingly one of the latest trends in bags happens to be the re-introduction of the black backpack. A bit more luxurious than your nostalgic Jansport, this mid-sized piece from Coach is spacious enough to hold your dopp kit and a pair of footwear for those unexpected last minute changes.
