Thanks to Spanish house Balenciaga for re-discovering the beauty in ugly dad kicks.
Don’t be a Carl Winslow or Uncle Phil in today’s era of throwback sneakers. Standout and pair your dad sneakers with smart suiting or a pair of oversized trousers for the ultimate street style set. The ‘90s are making a strong comeback as of late thanks in part to tv sitcom reboots, a thirst for meaningful, upbeat music, curious millennials and fashion so say goodbye to minimal, low-top lace-ups (momentarily) and welcome bulky, color and misshapen mid-top fits aka ‘Dad sneakers.’
Considered American urban relics, editors, models and street style enthusiasts have rediscovered and made these babies relevant again. You cannot stroll past a fashion Tumblr or random Instagram account without noticing everybody that has a pair of these coveted kicks.
Known designers like Balenciaga, Raf Simon, and even Yeezy have jumped on the wagon to produce their overpriced versions of these comfy trainers with extra bells and whistles like triple soles, muted ‘dirty’ hues, studs/graphic textures, and designs. Even fast fashion retailers like Zara, who have never shied away from reproducing affordable versions of anything, released a slew of choices to those fashion seekers who do not exactly have (or want) to spend a mortgage payment on a pair of trendy trainers.
Newsflash: These are not your father’s basic orthopedic sneakers!
